You’d think Madonna would know basic theater etiquette. The pop icon took in a performance of the Off-Broadway hip-hop musical Hamilton in New York City Saturday evening, but she was reportedly texting throughout the entire second act.
According to the New York Daily News, Madonna’s rude phone usage was noticed by the show’s star, author and composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. When Lin-Manuel took the stage at the end of the show to urge audience members to donate to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, he mentioned that there was someone in the audience who could afford a hefty donation — and hinted that person did a lot texting. The dig was allegedly aimed at Madonna.
Later, Lin-Manuel tweeted, “Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage #noselfieforyou.” The tweet was later removed.
Madonna has yet to comment on the alleged incident.
